This issue matters to Advocate Aurora Health. Did you know more than 5,800 people who experienced sexual and domestic violence received care from Aurora Health Care in 2018? There are forensic nurses available at nine different Aurora Medical Centers to treat women, men and children coping with recent trauma. Our 24-hour crisis hotline through Aurora Healing & Advocacy Services received more than 3,000 calls for help. We are committed to helping survivors throughout their healing journey, and your gifts have made it possible.
“Promoting our crisis hotline was a priority for us last year and philanthropic support was critical in achieving that,” explained Sharain Horn, RN, director of healing and advocacy services. “As a result, calls for information and assistance to the hotline tripled in 2018. That means more survivors were directed to the resources they need to begin their healing journey.”
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and there are so many ways you can support survivors and enhance these services near you through our Standing with Survivors campaign. All your donations will go directly to enhancing Aurora’s specialized programs that help make healing happen for survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
This year, Standing with Survivors culminates on Denim Day, which is Wednesday, April 24. Denim Day is an international day of awareness for survivors of sexual assault. Our Denim Day celebration, Hope Shining Blue, will be held at Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee. This event raises funds for Aurora Healing & Advocacy Services and celebrates the resilience of survivorship with a survivor model fashion show.
“Every survivor who’s been part of Hope Shining Blue talks about how important this moment was in their healing,” Sharain said. “The act of walking the runway and feeling our support changes them in a profound way.”
